Port Vale 1-2 Wycombe Wanderers

Port Vale are right up against it as they battle to avoid relegation from League One following a 2-1 defeat to Wycombe Wanderers at Vale Park.

Ethan Chislett cancelled out David Wheeler's opener for the visitors before Nigel Lonwijk scored a late winner, leaving Darren Moore's side three points from safety with two games of the season left.

Dale Taylor could have opened the scoring for Wycombe after just 40 seconds when he pounced on a defensive error and slid the ball wide from the edge of the area.

Wanderers were ahead just three minutes later, however, when Wheeler was in the right place to blast the ball home after Connor Ripley denied Sam Vokes.

The home side responded well after the early setback and would have been level in the ninth minute had Franco Ravizzoli not made a great save to push Chislett's effort over the bar.

It was Vale who started brightest after the break and were level just two minutes into the second half when Chislett found himself in space before slotting the ball past Ravizzoli.

The closing stages saw Vale going all out for the win with Jensen Weir coming close on a couple of occasions before Lonwijk sealed victory for Wanderers with only four minutes remaining.

Total car crash of a season from the opening day 7-0 defeat to the recent gutless losses to very average teams. We deserve to be relegated with question and there’s a massive overhaul required in the Summer to finish even top half in L2. The way we’ve given up our hard-fought L1 status so meekly is criminal. The fans are now so disconnected from the club it’s heartbreaking.

So without a miracle that's it - league 2 here we come, with a manager used to Championship players and budgets. He can't be blamed exactly for the mess we find ourselves in but has done little to make things better. To me he looks like the wrong man for the job next season but then I hope he proves me wrong.

What the hell has happened to Vale? When you beat us in the Carabao Cup at the end of October you were superb and gave us a right footballing lesson. I can't believe you're in the bottom four!!! Good luck with your last 2 games. Hope to see you next season!!!

It's too complex to explain in this space but when we played you we had Arblaster & Devine, the latter scoring a great goal in that game.
The succinct answer is we've suffered from David Flitcroft (you should remember him!) and a naive owner who was besotted with him and let him sell her a pup spending her millions in all the wrong places.

DM the worst appointment in any clubs living memory. Great guy, might even be an ok coach at non league level, but never ever a manager at any league level. Clueless and without a plan. Port Vale must get rid of him now or next season will see them relegated out of the Div 2 into obscurity

I'm undecided about Darren Moore as he hasn't brought in any players and inherited arguably the worst squad we've ever had with no full backs, no width and no strikers who can score. We had two excellent loan youngsters who ran our midfield until the were inevitably recalled in January and their departure exposed all our weaknesses. DM's win rate prior to Huddersfield was superb, over 40%. Fluke?

Carol has had a brutal lesson and hopefully she'll learn from it and do things differently from now on.
Hard to judge Darren Moore objectively yet as he inherited a disaster of a squad. At least he's got us attacking even if we're utterly toothless, the core problem we've had all season. Tonight summed us up, couldn't score during periods of being on top.

If smurthwaite had put two teams out that Carol has done over the last two seasons, sold off anyone who can kick a ball straight , left everyone in the Railway Paddock having have to walk to the car park to pee in a bucket. Then tell us we had lost £3.4 million in just one season, there would be marches every home game to get rid of him. As for the manager, he’s got 9pts from 45 he’s a disaster.

Well done Wycombe, you are finishing the season as well as you started it. Pitt about the awful middle bit, otherwise you would sit easily in the play-offs.

Port Vale are effectively relegated as Burton have two easy games remaining. Same with Cheltenham who have been shocking: cannot see them getting anything from their games against Lincoln or Peterborough.

Fleetwood sadly already gone...
