Sunderland and Ipswich Town want Manchester City midfielder Matt Smith

Sunderland and Ipswich Town want to loan Manchester City midfielder Matt Smith, according to a report by London Football News.

The Premier League champions are expected to recall the youngster from his current loan at QPR and loan him out to another club for more game time.

Smith, who is 20 years old, has spent the first half of this season with the Hoops but has made just eight appearances in all competitions.

The highly-rated midfielder started his career in the academy at West Bromwich Albion but switched to Manchester City at the age of 14. He has since risen up through the youth ranks at City but has never made a senior appearance for them.

Smith was loaned out to FC Twente last season in the Eredivisie and made 37 appearances for the Dutch side, chipping in with two goals.

The Wales international’s opportunities at QPR have been limited and he could now drop into League One this winter.

Sunderland are eyeing a busy end to the transfer window as Phil Parkinson looks to put his own stamp on his newly inherited squad. They have so far managed to bring in striker Kyle Lafferty and defender Bailey Wright but are eager for more deals to help boost their promotion aspirations.

Ipswich are a third tier rivals of the Black Cats and may battle with them to sign Smith on loan for the rest of the season. The Tractor Boys are currently 3rd in league and two points behind Wycombe Wanderers in the automatic promotion places.
