Cambridge United 1-1 Wycombe Wanderers

Cambridge's fight to stave off relegation will go down to the final day of the season after a 1-1 draw with Wycombe.

Victory would have seen the U's safe with a game to spare and they looked on course to achieve that, only for Luke Leahy's late penalty to deny them.

Cambridge travel to Port Vale on Saturday needing a point to secure their League One place.

Gassan Ahadme headed into the side netting early on before Wycombe's Nigel Lonwijk headed on to the crossbar and Cambridge keeper Will Mannion saved from Jason McCarthy at his near post.

Mannion then did well to tip Kieran Sadlier's effort from distance onto the post.

Franco Ravizzoli denied Macauley Bonne from point-blank range after 66 minutes before Mannion turned Matt Butcher's powerful shot wide.

Ahadme broke the deadlock for the hosts after 71 minutes with a thumping header from Liam Bennett's excellent cross.

But seven minutes from time, Lyle Taylor brought down Lonwijk and Leahy equalised from the spot for a share of the spoils.

Said it would come down to the last game and it has. Pity our gutless ‘friends’ in the north of the county choose tonight to put out a weak side and I hope that comes back to haunt them in the playoffs

A frustrating night at the Abbey. Considering the makeshift team we put out, a point is really precious. But it could have been more, but for that really soft pen. The ref let so much go, including some wild challenges, but then decides to give Wycombe the softest of pens. Up the U’s 🖤💛

Still in our own hands and the odds are still slightly tipped in our favour but there is no getting away from the fact that we have been a very poor side for most of the season. We should have been able to see this out tonight to get the job finished. I think we will stay up - just - but I won’t be surprised if we don’t. Either way it is hard to view this season as anything to be proud of.

TBF after Lincoln, I couldn't see where the points would come from, until maybe the Port Vale game. 12:30 Saturday throw the sink at it U's!

Goal difference could still sink us if Stevenage cut and run like 7 changes Posh. That would define them both.

If Cambridge do survive I wonder how they will plan for next season with three wealthy teams coming up as well as two from the Championship (and Rotherham).
